Red Bull Art of Can: In it to win it?!

A preview of what's to come!

After my finger gluing premonitions, myself and Jye made it (last entry none-the-less) to submissions for the Red Bull Art of Can located at the Artspace @ Helutrans. I won’t lie that I visually snooped the table while the Gallery organizer took our entry away – I needed to know what kind of Art Maestros we were up against! Leaving disappointed, I did however, find out a few days later that the judging process had begun!

Jye's Picture submission - our printer ran out of ink!

It’s on like Donkey Kong! Okay, so I slightly exaggerated our new found skills, I mean the last time I made paper mache, I was about 6 and I’m pretty sure half of it ended up on me.

20 years later, not much has changed! I can say though, that if we applied to work in an Aluminum factory, we’d be guaranteed a job!

More than 60 entries were submitted and we’d be lucky to get through to the 2nd round, but at the end of it all, there was every bit of enthusiasm, frustration and patience put in as the others!

Gui Boratto – “Vejo você na pista de dança!”

Guest writer, Zul Andra from Kiss My Culture, rolls up his sleeves and gets down jotting anecdotes by the Brazilian techno maestro, infamous for his hauntingly beatific melodies.

Gui Boratto Interview (Live) @ Zouk, Singapore
21 May 2010 by Zul Andra

Zul: How was your gig at Eleven at Toyko yesterday?

Gui Boratto: It was surprisingly amazing. It’s really hard for a Thursday to make a party there. It wasn’t full capacity, only 80% full but you can tell that the people there were really for the music. It was really nice, I mean after 5 seconds of each track the people already knew which tracks I was starting and they cheered. Loads of fun.

Red Bull Art of Can Singapore

Having captivated thousands of fans around the globe over the past decade, Red Bull’s pop art competition finally makes its way to Singapore! Besides the single rule that participants need to abide by – incorporating the famous blue and silver Red Bull cans from the Austrian Energy Drink giant – all you really need is some inspiration and a lot of imagination to conceive and produce an original work art.

Red Bull Art of Can culminates in a 10-day exhibition that will be held at the brand new *SCAPE building. It’s gonna be interesting and fascinating to see what the best creative minds in Singapore can come up with! The competition has seen innovative exhibits like a 14-foot bull and even a Mona Lisa replica portrait pieced together completely using the blue and silver cans!

The Red Bull crew will be bringing a special display piece to Zouk from 16 to 18 June, and not forgetting the official post-party in the main room on 2 July! Be sure to mark your calendars.

In the meantime, we bring on our first ever guest blogger, Claire Jedrek (adrenaline junkie by day and party animal by night) to bring us through her Red Bull Art of Can experience.

Since 2007, my not-so-secret affair with Red Bull has taken me to places unimaginable to most. From Malaysia to Brazil, Red Bull has been spoiling me with their dedication for fueling my adrenaline into a frenzy AND I don’t mean your average week out in the clubs pouring Jäger-Bombs down the throat, though I’ve done my fair share of that!

Simian Mobile Disco: Savour the Jelly Nerve Salad

Since my 2006 year-end obsession with “Hustler” + “It’s the Beat” (off: Attack Decay Sustain Release) and that fantastical audio-visual effort withSynthesise (off: Temporary Pleasure), the all round – all mighty (intelligent + quiet) SMD returns with a new skewed sound in techno imprint. +++++!!

I for one, was clued in only recently and have been hooked to “Aspic” + “Nerve Salad”; fresh pops off their stinking new album “Delicatessen & Delicacies”, sweeeeeet.

Already finding relevance within the dexterous terrain of Joy Orbison, Joker + Boy 8-Bit in their last round at Matter, you know it’s going to be a massive feast for the ears when the kids come to play with Simian Mobile Disco this weekend, Sat 15 May. Give this a miss, and you might just be sobbing regrets for having fluffed the best smarty party of the month of May, fo sho!

Show this one some love; also a tiny peeper for the amazing weekend ahead, you’ll be in for a sure treat;}
